after a long ride, we're back to seoul. we headed to dongdaemun, which is the famous all night shopping destination for fashion lovers. i wanted to buy a new pair of sneakers coz my boots literally broke on the 3rd day to korea! and i was walking in the broken boots 2 days straight...my feet are so tired! but we were already exhausted by the time we arrived dongdaemun, so we decided not to shop all night, just get the stuff we need and leave. we went to doota, it's like a mall with many pretty cloths, but the prices are kind of high...so i just got a running shoes from puma (this one), and mr. liao also bought a pair of shoes along with 2 hats. *happy*
i could finally walk again after switching to my new puma! it gave me strength to keep walking to our next stop → jangchung-dong jokbal alley. (it doesn't seems that far on the map, only like 3 - 4 blocks, but it was indeed quiet a walk...i almost gave up and sit on the ground and cry.... but i didn't! because i was soooo determined to eat that jokbal (pig's trotters)!!!
there're about 10 jokbal restaurants on the jangchung-dong jokbal alley. almost all of them have a long history. (the youngest restaurant has open for 30 years already). and the one we visited, chubby grandma's house 뚱뚱이할머니집족발, has been open for more than 50 years! it was also broadcasting on many korea tv shows! (i wanted to go to another store originally, but the time we arrived the alley was very late already..most of the stores are about to closed, except this one).
after we sat down, there's a chinese speaking auntie came and took our order. she suggested spicy cold noodle & korean pancake on top of the pig's trotters. so we ordered total of 3 dishes. the side dishes, sauces, and lettuce were put on our table in a second. they are all the necessities to pig's trotters!
spicy cold noodle 쟁반국수 (₩10000) was already mixed. it was very refreshing! and the spiciness is durable lol. (kobawoo in la also have this dish). the buckwheat noodle was chewy in a good way & the veggies are crisp! although it was cold, but the proper spiciness did warms up our body~
jokbal 족발 is their specialty of course. they use a special onion ginger broth to boil the pig's trotters for a long time, until the trotters turn to a beautiful golden brown color on the outside, and the stinky heavy pork smell was gone completely! we ordered the small one (₩30000) but the quantity was huge! i think it could fed 3 - 4 people!
i can't wait to pick one slice up and put into my mouth... (i walked long miles just for you!!) as expected, the meat has that perfect texture (not too chewy, not too soft) and it wasn't greasy at all! it tastes like heaven with their special shrimp sauce & miso sauce! and don't forget to wrap all the ingredients into that lettuce and get a big bite of it! you will not regret!! (man i just wanna go to ktown now and eat my jokbal!!)
mung bean pancakes 빈대떡 (₩7000) was fresh out of the frying pan, with crispy skins! the inside are so soft, and the vinegar sauce just makes it even more delicious! love it <3
as you can see the clock in below photo...we were trying our very best to finish each plate of food, we ate till almost midnight but still couldn't eat them all lol! so we boxed them and thinking we could give the left over jokbal to my middle school friend who happened to be in seoul at that time! (she went there for work & travel) (i wanna live there for long terms too.....)
two of us walked out the restaurant with our big bellies, fully satisfied. and it was raining outside, good thing i brought my umbrella. we ran to the nearest metro station and got on the last subway luckily! (there was no other passengers waiting in the station...i thought there's no more subway, but then we saw a worker/guide and i ran to him and ask, he said there's still a last one coming! oh yay!! *i really don't wanna take taxi you know...*)
anyways, i think korean style pig's trotters is worth a try! it's kinda similar to a taiwanese style trotters (origin from pingtung). but the dipping sauce, side dishes, and lettuce wrap in korea are totally different! you won't be able to taste that in other asia countries. so if you visit korea and you love pork, might as well drop by jangchung-dong jokbal alley. i think you can just pick any of the jokbal restaurants there and it will not disappoint you : )
