i'm finally half way through the 2014 korea trip series... i always joke with mr. liao that i probably won't finish this series even until my 2nd korea trip! lol. to avoid it from happening, i'll do my best to write! and edit photos! and write! and edit more photos! and write! and write!... hahaha
the 4th day after we arrived korea, schedule was packed as usual. we went to isaac toast in the morning which is just around the corner from our hotel. i heard that isaac is one of the must-go breakfast place in korea! we just had to pay a visit~
indeed isaac is very popular among the asian tourist. there was even a line in front of the shop! and more than half of the people standing in line were chinese....lol.
the store we went was the jongno location, the owner was a lady who can speak chinese, so it's a plus~ she was way too busy with orders that she didn't even have time to be the cashier! so what we did was put money to those baskets in front of the grill by ourselves. (get changes too). that was fun, it's like a honesty test. lol
it's been a long time that i don't quite remember what flavor did we order...but i can tell you, it was gooood! she spread butter on the toast & grilled it to golden brown. then stacked all the yummy ingredients on - eggs with corn, patty, cheese, lettuce, pickle, and special dressings~ it was so flavorful & juicy! perfect for such cold weather!
we finished our lovely breakfast inside the metro station, then took off to hyehwa, which leads to our first destination of the day - ihwa mural village.
我真的很愛秋天首爾的街景.. just can't get enough of it.
saw those beautiful trees with red/yellow leaves right after we got out of the metro station, i really love the fall street scene in seoul... just can't get enough of it.
then we followed our map, trying to get to naksan park.. but still, we kinda got lost (oops). however, i believe getting lost is a crucially romantic part in a getaway trip. don't you think? that's why i get to met these two little cuties along the way! what a pleasant surprise!
i'm not kidding when i say i am a human cat-radar. even i was in another country, i can still find those hidden street cats, and they still loves me!! they just ran to me and snuggled when they saw me came near! ahahahaha (pardon me, i'm a crazy cat lady).
they are probably sibling? i love orange tiger cats! just pure adorable. and they even had the same pose in that last picture! omg...cuteness overload!!
we kept on walking after finally saying goodbye to those 2 cuties... and started to see some murals along the street. (means we were on the right track lol). and we saw a bunch of students getting ready to paint on the wall.
so the origin of those murals & sculptures was actually "naksan project", an urban environment improvement project by the seoul tourism department, so the moon village* get to attract more residents & tourists. about 60 some residential artists joined this project and painted/decorated their village with many mural paintings and other artworks. that's how ihwa village became such a cute and artsy area!
*a moon village usually builds on small hills, cover with many long & steep stairs. the ground level is more high up and closer to the moon. that's how the name originated.
there are new paintings been created constantly, also the artists will update some older/faded art with new elements. so you might encounter different artworks every time you visit!
bumped into another cute cat -w-
we passed by naksan park on the way to ihwa village. and there were some installation arts along the outside border of the park. if you are not in a rush, it's nice to stop and take a good look at them. personally i loved the wire fishes, they were swimming towards us! so cute!
i took a photo of someone's rooftop garden, it was so japanese style i just had to captured it.
and i'm just fond of those narrow long stairs & tiny alleys. they might look dirty and ghetto, but i found them so beautiful, full of their own distinct cultural aesthetic.
anyone know what kind of melon is this? looks so yummy......
we went on a saturday morning (almost noon), and the village was packed with tourists! not exaggerate, people were just flushing in like a flood... don't forget to keep the volume down coz there're residents inside the houses! show some respect : )
the long stairways were decorated with pieces of colorful tile, it's so cute that i think the residents will be more joyful when they have to walk through them everyday!
asian is such a race that loves graffiti (aka doodling on every possible surface as you wish lol), and korea is by far the country i know of that loves graffiti to the max... i ran into tons of sketching/drawing/love message in every tourist attraction spot! lol
it's kind of random to use this funky image of a hair salon as an end to this post haha. but i thought it's really cool! (all those characters and colors...)
anyways, there are many mural villages scattered in korea, but ihwa is probably the most famous one. if you like street arts, then it's for you. but remember to come as early as possible (and come during weekdays) to avoid crazy tourist crowds.
