2014韓國自助korea trip • day 3. 春川家雞排 춘천집닭갈비 // dakgalbi- spicy stir fried chicken with rice cake
消失了幾天... i'm back!!
hello everyone! sorry i disappeared for a few days, due to my overworked right hand... my workload was crazy for the past week, and my right hand/wrist/arm/shoulder was hurting really bad..so i decided not to work at all the entire weekend. it actually still hurts right now, but i'm afraid if i keep disappearing, you guys will eventually forget about my existence lol. so yea, i'm back. :D (i should start training myself to use left hand..seriously).
this is the first english post about my korea trip from 2014 november. my previous korea posts are in chinese only, but if you really wanna know what happened during our trip for the first 2-3 days, pls let me know, i'll try to translate previous posts into english as well.
it's our 3rd day in korea, after visiting "my love from the star drama -special exhibition", we spent another 1 hr taking metro from dawhwa to sinchon. the station where we transfer was daegok, it's a beautiful station, and we noticed they even have special bike lane along the stairs for bike rider. very smart! (and a must i think...since seoul has those crazy long stairs in their metro station lol).
finally we arrived our lunch spot - 춘천집닭갈비, chungcheongjip dakgalbi.
gakgalbi is a special korean dish where boneless chicken pieces are marinated in a red chili pepper paste then stir-fry with various vegetables & rice cake in a big cast iron pan.
chungcheongjip is super popular among chinese tourist, you can easily find tons of food blog post about this place. and the reason we came? coz we are tourist too! lol and i also think their dakgalbi probably has more of a chinese taste to it, that's why chinese loved it. (just my guess).
as soon as we stepped in, we noticed that almost 4/5 of the people there were chinese! hahaha... and they even have several chinese speaking waiters! they provided a huge plastic bag to put our outwear in so it won't smells after the meal. they also gave us 2 cute little red dots pattern aprons to wear to prevent any oil splatters on our cloth. very thoughtful.
we got 2 orders of cheese dakgalbi (₩8500/order). the waiters quickly brought out the raw ingredients on several plates, along with the yummy banchan (side dishes) & a bowl of cold seaweed soup. then all we need to do is just enjoy our banchan while the waiters cook for us :)
although it's a bit weird to have cold soup in such freezing weather, but that bowl of soup was indeed my savior-of-the-day!! it soothes the spicy taste of dakgalbi perfectly! also the yellow radish pickle & macaroni salad saved my tongue through their sweetness. (phew). the green-ish radish is wasabi flavor, it tastes wonderful with dakgalbi!
the waiter came and stirred the dishes once every few minutes. after the chicken/veggie is fully cooked, they added the "makguksu", which is a korean buckwheat noodle, to the pan. and then they took out the noodle once it's cooked. and added the cheese on top of dakgalbi, put the lid on, after the cheese melted, now the dish is finally done! yay! (the whole cooking process took about 10-15 minutes).
the makguksu noodle is very chewy & full of flavor! i loved it! (personally i love chewy noodle!)
the chickens, cabbages, potatoes, rice cakes, bean sprouts are all super flavorful and spicy, in a good way. chickens are super tender & juicy as well, goes perfectly with the cheeeeeese! yummy~!! the portion doesn't look that big, however me and mr. liao still didn't finish the whole thing lol. so we skipped the fried rice of course. (you can add fried rice at the end with extra cost, most people add it, i heard it tastes awesome!)
i like chungcheongjip alot, i don't eat spicy but i still enjoyed it, that's how good it was! big recommendation for spicy food lover.
there are some places that makes dakgalbi in ktown los angeles too, i'm planing to visit one of them in the near future. will let you guys know how it goes~ it's actually not that hard to make dakgalbi at home either, maybe my next korean recipe will be it. hehe.
